Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has accused the country’s government of failing to properly implement a Supreme Court directive concerning the medical treatment of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, escalating the political dispute surrounding his detention and health. The controversy followed a Supreme Court order directing authorities to ensure that Khan received medical attention at a hospital. The former premier is currently being held at Adiala prison, and the court’s intervention came amid concerns raised by his family, supporters and medical representatives about his health and access to appropriate treatment.
PTI leaders have alleged that the authorities did not follow the court’s instructions in their intended form. According to the party, Khan was taken for a medical examination but was not provided with the comprehensive hospital-based treatment and evaluation that they believe the Supreme Court had ordered.
The allegations have triggered a fresh confrontation between PTI and the government, with the former ruling party demanding that the court’s directions be implemented fully. PTI representatives have questioned the circumstances surrounding Khan’s transfer, the nature of the medical examination conducted and the decision concerning his subsequent return to prison.
Khan’s family members and personal physician have also reportedly raised concerns over the manner in which the former Prime Minister was treated. They have sought greater clarity regarding his medical condition and access to independent medical professionals. The conflicting accounts have added to uncertainty over whether the court’s directive was fully complied with.
PTI leaders have warned that they could approach the courts again if the government continues to disregard what they describe as binding judicial instructions. The party has indicated that a contempt petition could be considered against officials responsible for implementing the order.
The latest dispute comes amid a prolonged political crisis surrounding Khan and his party. The former Prime Minister has remained imprisoned while facing multiple legal cases, and PTI has repeatedly accused the authorities of using legal proceedings to restrict his political activities and isolate him from supporters.
The government has rejected such accusations and maintained that Khan’s detention and legal proceedings are being handled according to the law. Authorities have also defended the steps taken regarding his medical care, although the disagreement over the Supreme Court directive has intensified political tensions.
The dispute over Khan’s medical treatment has also become a broader issue concerning the relationship between Pakistan’s political leadership, judiciary and prison authorities. PTI has argued that a Supreme Court order must be implemented fully and cannot be interpreted selectively by government officials. For Khan’s supporters, the issue is particularly significant because they have repeatedly demanded greater access to the former premier and adequate medical care during his imprisonment.
The government, meanwhile, faces pressure to demonstrate that the judicial order has been properly followed. The Supreme Court’s response to any potential contempt proceedings could determine the next stage of the confrontation.
