Teenager Collects 1,913 Pairs of Shoes for People in Need, Sets 10,000-Pair Goal

A 15-year-old girl in Massachusetts has turned a school service project into a continuing community initiative after collecting nearly 2,000 pairs of unwanted shoes for people in need. Maggie Driscoll, a student from Hingham, began collecting footwear as part of a citizenship project. What started as a small effort has since grown into a larger campaign, with Driscoll collecting 1,913 pairs of shoes and setting herself a much bigger target of 10,000 pairs.

The teenager was inspired in part by the memory of her late grandmother. Her project was connected to the Foley Citizenship Prize, which encourages students to undertake initiatives that benefit their communities. Rather than ending the effort after completing the project, Driscoll continued collecting shoes and encouraging others to contribute.

The donated footwear is being collected for Soles4Souls, a nonprofit organisation that distributes shoes and clothing to people facing economic hardship. The organisation also works to provide footwear that can help individuals generate income and support themselves. As the volume of donations increased, the project began requiring more space. Soles4Souls eventually provided Driscoll with a storage unit in Weymouth to accommodate the shoes she had collected.

Driscoll has also expanded her campaign by placing donation bins in schools and other locations, making it easier for people to contribute footwear they no longer need. Residents, schools and local businesses have joined the effort, helping the teenager turn a personal initiative into a broader community campaign.

The project has also highlighted how items that are no longer wanted by one person can still be useful to someone else. Instead of allowing unwanted shoes to remain unused or be discarded, the initiative gives them a second purpose while directing them towards people who need them.

Despite having collected more than 1,900 pairs, Driscoll is still far from her ultimate goal. She needs another 8,087 pairs to reach the target of 10,000. For Driscoll, the campaign has evolved beyond a one-time school assignment. Her continued efforts demonstrate how a young person’s relatively simple idea can develop into a sustained community initiative when others participate and contribute.
