Following a violent student demonstration in Phagwara, LPU was shuttered for ten days.

Last night, a demonstration by Lovely Professional University (LPU) students in Phagwara, Punjab, descended into violence as they clashed with police, prompting a lathi charge to subdue them. The institution has postponed midterm exams till further notice and will be closed for ten days starting today as a precaution.

After vandalizing the university campus and blocking the New Delhi-Amritsar National Highway since Saturday nite, the students threw stones at police officers, wounding a few of them. When police attempted to clear the highway, they also set fire to and damaged police cars. To keep the scene under control, the cops had to use a light lathi charge.

The alleged rape of a female student on campus a few days ago and the university administration’s apparent inactivity are the reasons behind the students’ protests. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) made up of top police officers and student representatives has been established to look into the situation, Jalandhar Range DIG Naveen Singla informed the reporters.

Lovely Professional University, meanwhile, has characterized the purported rape incident as untrue, unfounded, and manufactured rumors. Students who are not returning home during the closure have been instructed by the institution to remain in their dorms and remain composed while adhering to official directives
