The “Largest Steel Plant In US History” will be constructed by India’s Essar Group: Trump

India’s Essar Group intends to invest $18 billion in the US, including a $15 billion steel mill in Iowa, in one of the largest foreign bets. Members of the Ruia family, who run the business, attended an Oval Office event when US President Donald Trump unveiled the Iowa project.

The facility will be built by Essar’s US affiliate Mesabi Metallics. Iron ore will come from the company’s activities in Minnesota, and it is anticipated to be a component of an integrated steel supply chain in the US. Trump said it will be the “largest steel plant in American history“, pegging it as an economic victory in a key battleground state where Republicans face competitive midterm races.

“Today we’re thrilled to announce that Mesabi Metallics will be building the largest steel plant in American history in the great state of Iowa. It’s the largest plant, one of the largest plants in the world, but it’s the largest plant in America by far,” the US president told reporters.

When fully constructed, the factory, which is scheduled to start production in 2030, is anticipated to generate 10 million tons of steel yearly. According to the White House, steel will be produced entirely in the United States.

Trump attributed the “roaring back to life” of the American steel industry to the 50% tariffs on steel imports he put on steel imports last year. “Everyone is building their plants here because they don’t want to pay tariffs,” Trump said. “It’s really not that complicated.” Mesabi Metallics Chairman Rewant Ruia congratulated Trump “for bringing back the importance of creating products in America” and expressed gratitude for the Trump administration’s emphasis on domestic manufacturing.

The statement emphasized Iowa’s enhanced significance for Republicans and Trump, who has promised to run a campaign there in the upcoming weeks. There were also Iowa Republicans at the gathering, two of whom were candidates for office.

“We’re going to do a great rally. We’ll all be there together,” Trump said alongside Representative Ashley Hinson, who is running for the US Senate, and Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who is up for re-election. Also joining him were Governor Kim Reynolds and Senator Joni Ernst, who are not seeking new terms in office.

According to its website, the Essar Group is an industrial conglomerate that was founded in India in 1969 by brothers Shashi and Ravi Ruia. It has investments in a variety of industries, including energy, mining, technology, and retail. Its holdings in India include the second-biggest single-location refinery at Vadinar and the largest single-location steel plant in Hazira, Gujarat.

Additionally, it purchased Shell’s Stanlow refinery in the United Kingdom. It has a low-carbon steel mill in Saudi Arabia planned. With approximately 1.4 billion tons of iron ore deposits under its control, Mesabi Metallics, its US affiliate, is headquartered in Nashwauk, Minnesota, and has been in business since acquiring Minnesota Steel in 2007.
