New Delhi, October 1, 2026: The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to interfere with a Calcutta High Court order denying interim relief to the *Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) faction, which sought permission to operate four debit-frozen bank accounts containing around *₹804 crore**.
A bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and P.B. Varale said it was not inclined to exercise its jurisdiction under Article 136, as the main matter remains pending before the Calcutta High Court. The Supreme Court asked the High Court to expedite the proceedings while making clear that it had not examined the merits of the dispute.
The accounts were frozen by the West Bengal Police following a criminal investigation. The wider dispute is unfolding alongside an internal TMC factional battle over the party’s name and election symbol, which is currently before the Election Commission.
