Delhi Police has registered three FIRs following protests in central Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstrations were held on Friday and involved student organisations, political groups and civil society activists protesting over issues related to the revision of electoral rolls.
Two FIRs were registered at Parliament Street police station, while another was filed at Connaught Place police station. Police invoked Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with disobedience of an order issued by a public servant. According to police, no individual or organisation has been named as an accused in the cases so far. Officials said information about the organisers and participating groups has been recorded as part of the investigation.
The protests involved members of several organisations and political groups, including the Aam Aadmi Party, All India Students’ Association, Students’ Federation of India, National Students’ Union of India and Indian Youth Congress. Demonstrators attempted to move towards Jantar Mantar despite restrictions on public gatherings in parts of central Delhi.
Police detained hundreds of protesters after some participants attempted to cross barricades put up to prevent the crowd from moving towards the designated area. Security arrangements were strengthened across central Delhi, with thousands of police and paramilitary personnel deployed in the area.
The demonstrations were primarily linked to concerns surrounding the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Protesters have raised allegations over the possible deletion of large numbers of names from voter lists and have demanded accountability from the poll authorities.
The Election Commission has maintained that the revision exercise is aimed at identifying duplicate, deceased and otherwise ineligible entries in electoral rolls. The poll panel has also said that eligible voters whose names are missing can follow the prescribed process to have their details included. Police said the investigation into the protests is continuing and further action will depend on the evidence collected in the cases.
