Defence exports can create relationships that extend well beyond military hardware.
With Armenia, India has developed a deeper strategic connection in the South Caucasus. With South Korea, defence cooperation complements a broader strategic partnership spanning technology, industry and the Indo-Pacific.
India’s emerging model is therefore not simply “selling weapons abroad.” It increasingly involves building industrial relationships, developing technologies, training personnel and creating long-term maintenance and research partnerships.
This also supports India’s objective of strategic autonomy: maintaining relationships with multiple technologically capable partners while simultaneously increasing domestic manufacturing.
At the same time, India’s rise as a defence exporter does not eliminate challenges. High-end weapons markets remain intensely competitive, and establishing reliability, after-sales support and long-term supply chains is essential for sustaining international confidence.
