Changes introduced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will make it simpler for doctors who are already temporary residents of Canada to become permanent residents due to a shortage of skilled medical professionals. Now, certain present conditions for acquiring permanent resident status in Canada through express entry programs will not apply to doctors.
Why is it so difficult for Canadian doctors to be accepted into Express entry programs?
Due to their fee-for-service payment arrangement, which differs from the usual employer-employee relationship, doctors working in Canada have a difficult time qualifying for the expedited entry program. As a result, their path to permanent residence status is hampered because they are viewed as independent contractors.
What modifications have been made?
The self-employed restriction will be eliminated, according to Canada’s Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, to make it easier for doctors to obtain permanent residence status.
According to the minister, foreign-born doctors have been assisting in maintaining family health and caring for our older population. Their knowledge and abilities are valuable assets to our neighborhood, and it doesn’t take them long to become our friends, neighbors, and fellow community leaders. By making it simpler for them to select Canada as their country of residence permanently, the announced measures send a message to these doctors that we want them to stay.
Why was the modification started?
The initiative is part of Canada’s effort to recruit and keep physicians and other healthcare professionals, in addition to simplifying the immigration process for doctors. Approximately 4,300 permanent residents had been accepted as of June 2022 under the health care component.
