Curfew was imposed in Balasore, Odisha, on Monday night following a violent clash between two communities triggered by suspicions of cow slaughter earlier in the day. The initial response from the administration involved enforcing prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in specific areas. However, to prevent further escalation, a curfew was later enforced across the entire town.
Balasore Collector Ashish Thakare explained, “Although there were no reports of fresh violence after the prohibitory orders were imposed, we decided to enforce a curfew across the entire municipal area as a precautionary measure.” To further control the situation, the state government has also suspended internet services in Balasore and surrounding areas.
Sanjay Kumar, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), who is currently stationed in Balasore, reported that 34 individuals from both communities have been arrested, with the number expected to rise. “Forty-three platoons of police have been deployed in the town, and an additional 15 platoons are being mobilized. Four IPS officers and senior police officers from headquarters are also being deployed to monitor the situation,” Kumar stated. He assured that measures are in place to minimize inconvenience to the public, and essential services, including ambulances, are exempt from the curfew.
The clash originated in a communally sensitive part of north Balasore, following allegations that water in a local train had turned red, which some suspected was due to cow slaughter. This suspicion led to heated arguments between the communities, escalating to stone-pelting. The police intervened with a lathi charge to control the situation. According to official sources, four to five policemen and civilians were injured, and several vehicles were damaged.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has been in discussions with the Balasore Collector to ensure the situation is brought under control. Emphasizing the state’s commitment to peace, Majhi stated, “Odisha is a peace-loving state, and public order will not be allowed to be disrupted under any circumstances.” To foster harmony, the district administration is conducting peace committee meetings with local residents.
The swift actions taken by the authorities aim to restore normalcy and prevent further communal tension. The imposition of curfew, suspension of internet services, and deployment of additional police forces underscore the administration’s proactive stance in handling the situation.
Balasore’s residents are hopeful that these measures will help bring back peace and stability to the town. The local administration’s engagement with community leaders and the ongoing peace committee meetings are expected to play a crucial role in diffusing tensions and fostering mutual understanding between the communities.
As the situation evolves, the administration’s focus remains on maintaining order and ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents. The government’s response highlights its commitment to preserving communal harmony and upholding law and order in the face of potential disruptions.
