Delhi government launches Recycler Machine to tackle monsoon waterlogging

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 6th April 2025

The Delhi Government has unveiled a new technology for cleaning sewers, the “Recycler Machine,” to tackle the city’s persistent waterlogging problems during the monsoon period. The device, brought in from Mumbai, is engineered to function without manual input into sewage systems.

On Sunday, a trial of the Recycler Machine was held in Greater Kailash, supervised by Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma of the Public Works Department (PWD).

The Recycler Machine executes various functions, such as extracting silt and contaminated water, treating water on-site, and recycling treated water for jetting operations. In contrast to traditional super sucker machines, this device operates as a unified unit and does not need individual water tankers. Its streamlined design facilitates use in crowded spaces and aims to enhance the efficiency of cleaning tasks.

Departmental meetings conducted before the trial emphasized the poor state of Delhi’s sewer systems, with many lines allegedly remaining unclean for decades. These factors have been associated with frequent occurrences of waterlogging in the monsoon season.

In this context, the Delhi Government has revealed intentions to implement the Recycler Machine in every assembly constituency. The deployment will feature post-cleaning assessments with CCTV to guarantee that the sewer lines are completely cleared and functional. The technology has previously been implemented in various Indian cities, such as Mumbai and regions in Gujarat.

Authorities declared that the step-by-step rollout in Delhi is set to finish before the impending monsoon season.
