Chief Ministers have been appointed in all but one of the four states where election results were announced earlier this month. including Tamil Nadu, where a divided mandate was cast by people. However, neighboring Kerala, where the UDF won a resounding victory, is still waiting for its chief minister while alliance leader Congress tries to put an end to internal strife among supporters of three candidates. The BJP’s Kerala branch has offered advise on who the party should choose to head Kerala due to the length of time the Congress has been waiting for a chief minister.
Former Union minister and Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar sarcastically hinted to the party’s choice between KC Venugopal, VD Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala in response to a satirical post about the current impasse over the Kerala chief ministerial nomination. Each of the three is vying to be the chief minister of Kerala.
A post on X mocked the lobbying within Congress for the top post, saying, “Hilarious tough fight between Kerala BJP and national BJP. Kerala BJP wants KC Venugopal in Kerala, national BJP wants KC Venugopal in Delhi”.
The tweet seemed to imply that Congress general secretary KC Venugopal is preferred by the BJP leadership in Delhi to stay in the nation’s capital because he doesn’t represent much of a political threat there. The Kerala BJP would also like him to serve as chief minister for similar reasons. In response, Chandrasekhar said, “My response – I will neither confirm nor deny that this is true,” along with zipper-mouth, smiling, and laughing emojis.
The Congress-led UDF has not yet announced its choice for chief minister, despite winning 102 seats in the 140-member House in the Assembly elections. Three senior leaders have emerged as front-runners after intense discussions. Both online and offline, supporters of each camp have united behind their leaders, sparking a verbal sparring match, poster campaigns, displays of power, and vigorous lobbying.
The Assembly elections were contested by Satheesan and Chennithala, but now-MP Venugopal has now entered the campaign, making it a three-way struggle for the top position. The infighting has persisted despite calls from all three leaders for followers to refrain from public displays of support and factionalism.
Congress sources claim that most MLAs are supporting Venugopal over Satheesan, who is still favored by party members, and Chennithala, the former Leader of the Opposition who was once thought to be a formidable candidate for the Chief Minister position in 2021 prior to the Left’s comeback.
