Fugitive Businessman Umar Farooq Zahoor Sparks Row After Appearance With JD Vance in Islamabad

A Pakistan-origin businessman wanted in Europe has triggered fresh controversy after being seen alongside JD Vance during a recent visit to Islamabad. The individual, Umar Farooq Zahoor, is reportedly sought by Norwegian authorities over alleged involvement in a large-scale financial fraud case.

According to reports, Zahoor has been under investigation in Norway for years in connection with a multi-million-dollar banking fraud and money laundering operation. Authorities there have issued warrants seeking his arrest and extradition, linking him to one of the country’s most significant financial crime cases. He has also faced scrutiny in other European jurisdictions, including Switzerland, over similar allegations.

The controversy intensified after visuals surfaced showing Zahoor interacting with Vance during the US Vice President’s diplomatic visit to Pakistan, which was primarily focused on discussions surrounding regional tensions and Iran-related issues. The footage quickly went viral, raising questions about how a fugitive wanted in Europe gained access to high-level diplomatic circles.

Despite his legal troubles abroad, Zahoor appears to enjoy a markedly different standing in Pakistan. He has been honoured with the country’s prestigious civilian award, the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, and is often credited with facilitating foreign investment into the country. His name has also surfaced in connection with the Toshakhana case involving former Prime Minister Imran Khan, where he has been described in some accounts as a whistleblower.

Born in Norway to Pakistani parents, Zahoor later established business operations in Dubai and has remained a controversial figure with sharply contrasting reputations. While European authorities portray him as a fugitive linked to serious financial wrongdoing, supporters in Pakistan view him as an influential investor.

The episode underscores the complexities of international law enforcement and diplomacy, particularly when individuals face differing legal and public perceptions across countries.
