Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has addressed backlash following his public congratulations to director Milap Zaveri for the success of his latest film, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat. The film, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa, has garnered ₹16.75 crore net in India and ₹21 crore worldwide within two days of its release on October 21, 2025. Despite its commercial success, the film has faced criticism for promoting misogynistic themes, particularly regarding its portrayal of consent.

Mehta’s congratulatory message on X (formerly Twitter) was met with criticism from some users who accused him of endorsing a film that romanticizes problematic behavior. One user remarked, “This ‘sensitive, intelligent’ man is busy congratulating the writer-director of those misogynistic films where ‘No’ means ‘Yes’.” In response, Mehta defended his stance, stating, “One always wishes films could change the world… But alas.” He further argued that if films have the power to influence, they can also enlighten, suggesting that his gesture was a simple acknowledgment of a colleague’s success without ulterior motives.

Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat tells the story of a politician, Vikramaditya (Harshvardhan), who falls deeply in love with an actor, Adaa (Sonam), who holds different views on love. The film’s portrayal of the relationship has sparked debates about its depiction of romantic dynamics and the messages it conveys to audiences.

The controversy highlights ongoing discussions in the Indian film industry about the responsibility of filmmakers in representing relationships and consent, and the impact such portrayals can have on societal perceptions.
