Hoax Bomb Threat Sparks Security Alert at Coimbatore Passport Office
News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 2nd March 2026

Coimbatore authorities were on high alert on Tuesday after the Passport Office in the Chitra area received an anonymous email threatening a bomb on the premises. The message, which warned of an explosive device, prompted immediate action by police and specialist security units, disrupting regular operations and causing concern among staff and visitors.
Responding swiftly, the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) conducted a thorough inspection of the office, checking every section of the building for potential explosives. After an exhaustive search, no suspicious items were found, and preliminary investigations suggested that the threat was a hoax. Officials described the email as a deliberate attempt to create panic and tension rather than an actual danger.
City police have launched an investigation to trace the origin of the email and identify the individual or group responsible for sending it. Authorities noted that hoax bomb threats place a significant strain on emergency resources, diverting personnel and time from other critical duties. They also highlighted the psychological impact on employees and visitors, who were temporarily evacuated and instructed to follow safety protocols while security teams completed their assessment.
This incident comes amid a series of similar false bomb threats reported across Coimbatore and surrounding districts in recent weeks. Schools, private institutions, and other public offices have received anonymous emails warning of explosives, forcing precautionary measures each time. Although these threats have consistently proven to be false, they continue to disrupt normal functioning and raise concerns over public safety.
Officials have reminded organizations and the general public to remain vigilant and report suspicious communications promptly. They emphasized that such threats, even if proven false, are taken seriously under the law, and those responsible could face severe legal consequences,
