Indian actor Manoj Kumar, celebrated for his performances in Hindi films with patriotic motifs, has passed away at the age of 87.

Kumar passed away in Mumbai due to heart issues on Friday, his son Kunal Goswami informed a news agency. “He had health-related issues for a long time. It’s the grace of God that he bid adieu to this world peacefully. His cremation will take place tomorrow [Saturday],” Goswami said.

During his career, Kumar gained recognition for acting – and occasionally directing – movies that emphasized national pride and unity. As a result, he was frequently referred to as “Bharat” Kumar – an allusion to the ancient Sanskrit term for India.

Originally named Harikrishan Goswami, he adopted the name Manoj Kumar in keeping with Bollywood custom.

He entered Indian cinema in the late 1950s and continued to appear in numerous films, many of which featured patriotic themes, such as Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Pachhim (1970), and Kranti (1981).

Kumar received numerous national accolades, such as the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which is India’s top distinction for cinema. He was also affiliated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Modi expressed his condolences, describing Kumar as an “icon” of Indian cinema and stating that his creations “sparked a sense of national pride and will keep inspiring future generations.”

India’s President Droupadi Murmu posted on X that she was “saddened by the demise of legendary actor and filmmaker”.

“He has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema,” she wrote.
