Kharagpur Division of South Eastern Railway Steps Up Campaign Against Alarm Chain Misuse

Kharagpur : The Kharagpur Division of South Eastern Railway is intensifying its efforts to educate passengers about the proper use of the Alarm Chain Pulling (ACP) system and to prevent its misuse. The ACP is a critical safety mechanism designed exclusively for genuine emergencies, such as life-threatening situations, medical emergencies, fires, or other serious safety concerns.
Despite this, instances of misuse such as pulling the alarm chain to disembark at unauthorized stations or for personal convenience remain prevalent, causing significant disruption to train operations and inconvenience to Passengers.
In the last four months, strict enforcement measures have led to the detection of numerous ACP misuse cases, accompanied by arrests:

• January 2026: 147 cases detected, 139 arrests made
• February 2026: 142 cases detected, 133 arrests made
• March 2026: 176 cases detected, 160 arrests made
• April 2026: 141 cases detected, 126 arrests made

These statistics underscore the actions taken by the Railway Protection Force and the Commercial Department to curb unauthorized use of the alarm chain. Regular inspections and drives are conducted across trains and stations, supplemented by continuous announcements and public awareness campaigns aimed at sensitizing passengers about the seriousness of ACP misuse.
Passengers are reminded that unauthorized activation of the alarm chain constitutes an offence under the Railways Act, carrying penalties including fines and possible arrest. Rail authorities urge everyone to reserve the use of the alarm chain strictly for genuine emergencies to help maintain safe, timely, and smooth train operations.
