Veteran actress Asha Parekh recently addressed long-standing rumors about her alleged marriage to actor Shammi Kapoor. During an appearance on Arbaaz Khan’s talk show, she revealed the true story behind the speculation, which originated from a prank by director Om Prakash.
Parekh recounted that while they were filming in Mahabaleshwar, Om Prakash casually declared that she and Shammi Kapoor were married. The rumor quickly gained traction, especially during a party at Nasser Hussain’s place, where people started whispering about the supposed marriage. Parekh and Kapoor decided to play along with the joke. Journalist Devyani Chaubal was present and heard the rumors, which further fueled the gossip.
When asked if Shammi had instructed her to keep the rumors alive, Asha revealed that Shammi had indeed asked her not to deny the claims, as he was playing a prank on everyone. She added that at the time, Shammi was involved in a relationship, and the person he was dating became very upset with the rumors.
Asha Parekh and Shammi Kapoor shared the screen in several notable films, including *Teesri Manzil*, *Pagla Kahin Ka*, *Dil Deke Dekho*, and *Jawan Mohabbat*. Shammi Kapoor married Geeta Bali in 1955, but she tragically passed away in 1965. He remarried Neila Devi Gohil in 1969. In contrast, Asha Parekh chose to remain single.
Asha Parekh’s career evolved beyond acting; she became a producer and director, working on TV shows like *Jyoti* and *Palaash Ke Phool*, and directing projects such as *Dal Mein Kala Hain*, *Kora Kagaz*, and *Kangan*. Shammi Kapoor continued his acting career until he took a hiatus from the big screen, with his last appearance in *Tamasha* in 2011, the same year he passed away.
