PM-Kisan 20th installment sent to 9.7 crore farmers: All about Rs 20,500 cr payout

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) is a government initiative introduced in February 2019 to offer direct financial assistance to small and marginal farmers throughout India. Under this program, qualified farmers get 6,000 annually, delivered in three payments of 2,000 each via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into their bank accounts linked to Aadhaar.

On August 2, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the 20th installment of PM-KISAN from Varanasi. During this phase, around 9.7 crore farmers nationwide will be provided with about 20,500 crore. The DBT approach guarantees transparency and removes all intermediaries. Since its initiation, the program has delivered approximately 3.69 lakh crore to farmers in 19 installments. The 19th installment was launched on February 24, 2025, in Bhagalpur, Bihar, aiding over 9.8 crore farmers with over 22,000 crore.

PM-KISAN leverages India’s digital infrastructure, such as Aadhaar, Jan Dhan accounts, and mobile connectivity, to ensure a smooth process. Important technological advancements consist of the PM-KISAN Mobile App (introduced in 2020) for registration, status verification, and updates.

The Face Authentication feature (introduced in 2023) enables farmers to perform e-KYC from a distance. More than 5 lakh Common Service Centres (CSCs) have been registered to assist with enrollments. System for addressing grievances incorporated into the online platform. The AI chatbot ‘Kisan-eMitra’, which was introduced in September 2023, provides farmers with immediate responses in their local languages, powered by Bhashini. Farmers can also help 100 other individuals with e-KYC in their neighborhoods. Officials can perform e-KYC for as many as 500 farmers  .

Beyond financial aid, PM-KISAN gives farmers security, confidence, and independence. It has helped them:

  • Buy better seeds or farming equipment
  • Support children’s education
  • Pay for medical needs or family events
  • Feel included in the nation’s progress
  • The scheme is not just about money; it’s a symbol of trust and empowerment.
