A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck off the coast of Russia’s far-eastern Kamchatka Peninsula early Sunday morning, as reported by the regional earthquake monitoring service. The tremor, which occurred at a depth of approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles), was registered just after 7:00 a.m. local time. The epicenter was situated about 90 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the region’s capital.
Residents along the coast, including those in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, experienced the shaking as the quake struck. The local emergencies ministry swiftly responded, deploying operational teams of rescuers and firefighters to inspect buildings for potential damage. The regional branch of Russia’s emergencies ministry in Kamchatka shared updates on Telegram, detailing ongoing assessments of the situation.
Initially, the US National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami threat following the quake. However, the threat was soon retracted as no significant tsunami waves were anticipated. Local authorities also decided against issuing a tsunami alert, deeming it unnecessary.
Following the main earthquake, several aftershocks were recorded. These aftershocks, while notable, were of lower intensity compared to the primary quake. The Kamchatka branch of Russia’s Unified Geophysical Service confirmed this information on their website, indicating that the region experienced additional seismic activity but without significant impact.
The Kamchatka Peninsula, situated in a seismically active area known as the “Ring of Fire,” is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. This region encircles much of the Pacific Ocean and is characterized by its geological volatility. It is home to more than two dozen active volcanoes, contributing to the frequent seismic and volcanic activity in the area.
