PM Modi Accorded Grand Welcome at Maldives Independence Day, Signals Diplomatic Reset

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / July 25, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured with a 21-gun salute and a ceremonial guard of honour as he arrived in Malé to participate in the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations. Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu personally received Modi at Republic Square, where both national anthems were played, symbolising a significant warming of bilateral ties.

Modi is the first foreign head of government to be hosted by President Muizzu since his election in 2023. The visit is widely viewed as a diplomatic reset following strained ties during Muizzu’s earlier “India Out” campaign. Streets in Malé were adorned with Indian flags and posters welcoming Modi, while the Maldivian defence ministry displayed a large portrait of the Indian Prime Minister on its headquarters.

During his two-day visit, Modi will serve as the chief guest at the national celebration, inaugurate India-backed infrastructure projects, and sign several agreements aimed at deepening cooperation in trade, connectivity, and maritime security.

The visit underscores India’s renewed strategic engagement with the Maldives, especially amid China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean. It also reaffirms New Delhi’s commitment to regional partnerships under its “Neighbourhood First” policy.
