Middle East Tensions Escalate As Fresh Strikes Near Strait Of Hormuz Raise Global Concerns

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/12th June 2026

The conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran intensified on Friday as fresh strikes were reported near the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, fuelling fears of a broader regional escalation and renewed disruption to global energy markets.
Bandar Abbas, located close to the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, has emerged as a focal point in the ongoing crisis. The narrow waterway serves as one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes, with a significant portion of global oil shipments passing through it every day. Any prolonged instability in the region could have far-reaching consequences for international trade and energy supplies.
The latest developments have heightened concerns over the possibility of shipping disruptions, prompting governments and financial markets to closely monitor the situation. Oil prices remained volatile amid uncertainty over whether military operations would intensify or diplomatic efforts would prevail.
At the same time, reports suggested that backchannel discussions aimed at easing tensions between Washington and Tehran were continuing. Former US President Donald Trump indicated that progress had been made towards a potential agreement designed to prevent further escalation. Iranian officials, however, maintained that no final understanding had been reached and emphasised that any future arrangement would have to align with the country’s national interests.
The crisis has also drawn attention to Iran’s internal political dynamics, with speculation surrounding the role of Mojtaba Khamenei in the country’s decision-making process. No official confirmation regarding any change in leadership or authority has been issued by Tehran.
Israel, meanwhile, reiterated its position on preventing Iran from developing nuclear capabilities and remained on high alert as regional tensions persisted. Concerns have also grown over the possibility of the conflict spreading to neighbouring countries through allied groups operating across the Middle East.
