A 25-year-old Hindu law student and assistant temple priest was allegedly kidnapped, tortured and held captive for ransom in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, in an incident that has raised fresh concerns over the safety of minority communities in the country. The victim, identified as Subhash Deuri, is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after sustaining multiple injuries during the alleged abduction.

According to police and local media reports, Deuri, a first-year law student at Central Law College, also served as an assistant priest at the central temple of Jagannath University. The incident reportedly took place on Monday night when he arrived in the Swamibagh area of Dhaka. Investigators said a group of unidentified men allegedly forced him into a house, where he was confined and physically assaulted for several hours.

The victim’s family claimed that the kidnappers subjected him to severe torture and pressured him to arrange ransom money for his release. During his captivity, the accused allegedly forced Deuri to contact his relatives. His sister reportedly received a call from his mobile phone in the early hours of Tuesday, during which the kidnappers demanded 30,000 Bangladeshi Taka in exchange for his freedom. The family later transferred 26,000 Taka to a bank account provided by the alleged abductors in an attempt to secure his release.

Police said Deuri eventually managed to escape by jumping from the building where he was being held. Although he sustained additional injuries while fleeing, he was able to reach safety and later sought medical assistance. His roommate subsequently took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors diagnosed fractures in his leg and hip. Medical authorities said he remains under observation and may require surgery depending on his recovery.

Law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to identify those responsible for the alleged kidnapping and assault. Officials said they are collecting evidence, examining witness statements and reviewing available leads to trace the suspects. No arrests have been reported so far. The alleged abduction has prompted concern among minority rights groups, which have called for a thorough investigation and stronger measures to ensure the safety and security of vulnerable communities in Bangladesh. Police have assured that efforts are underway to bring those responsible to justice.
