Shillong implements a new dog registration law

Shillong city’s municipal authorities have made pet dog registration mandatory, meaning that all dog owners must get official tags or risk fines. In accordance with Section 128 of the Municipal Act, the Shillong Municipal Board declared that citizens must register their dogs and buy identification tags for Rs 250.
“Dogs found without proper tags will be classified as strays, and owners will face legal consequences,” said the Chief Executive Officer of the Shillong Municipal Board in a public notice.
The goal of the new law is to combat the rising issue of stray dogs in public areas. It is now legally compulsory for pet owners to keep their pets off public roadways and streets. The registration system will assist differentiate between owned pets and real strays, officials said, allowing for improved enforcement of animal control procedures inside city bounds.
Dog owners can complete the registration process at the Shillong Municipal Board office. The board advises immediate compliance to avoid potential legal action under the Municipal Act.
