Vinesh Phogat, the renowned Indian wrestler, has hinted at a potential return to the sport despite recently announcing her retirement. Her retirement, declared in a poignant social media post following her disqualification from the 50kg freestyle final at the Paris Olympics on August 7, left her fans disheartened. The disqualification occurred due to her being 100 grams overweight on the day of the gold medal match, a setback that was compounded by the dismissal of her appeal for a joint silver medal by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Following this distressing period, Phogat received an overwhelming outpouring of support from her fans and community upon her return home. The warm reception she received highlighted the deep connection and admiration she has cultivated throughout her career. Vinesh was moved to tears as she was greeted by thousands of well-wishers at the airport and along her journey to her village, Balali, in the Charkhi Dadri district. The heartfelt reception, which extended to a 12-hour journey home, was a testament to her impact and the respect she commands.

Amidst this emotional return, Phogat expressed her feelings about the missed Olympic medal, referring to it as the “biggest wound” of her life. However, the support she has garnered from her fellow Indians, her village, and her family has instilled a sense of courage and hope in her. She hinted at the possibility of returning to wrestling, encouraged by the love and support she has received. Phogat’s uncle, Mahavir Phogat, has also voiced his desire for her to reconsider her retirement and prepare for the next Olympics in Los Angeles.

Despite the recent setbacks, Phogat remains one of India’s most accomplished wrestlers, with accolades including the 2018 Asian Games gold medal, three Commonwealth Games gold medals, and two World Championship bronze medals. The exceptional welcome she received has not only bolstered her spirits but has also inspired her to consider continuing her wrestling career. She expressed a deep desire for more young women from her village to follow in her footsteps and surpass her achievements, aiming to promote women’s wrestling in her community.

Phogat’s journey is a poignant reminder of the highs and lows of competitive sports. Her potential return to wrestling could provide a significant boost to Indian wrestling and inspire future generations of female athletes. As she contemplates her future, the wrestling community and her supporters eagerly await her decision, hopeful for her return and the continuation of her illustrious career.
