President Joe Biden arrived in France on Wednesday to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, emphasizing his dedication to U.S. allies in Europe and contrasting his democratic vision with that of his 2024 political opponent, Donald Trump. Biden’s five-day trip includes participation in the D-Day celebrations in Normandy, a significant location where Allied forces launched a pivotal assault against Nazi Germany during World War II. The visit will also feature a high-profile speech and a formal state meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
During his time in Normandy, Biden will engage in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy regarding the ongoing conflict with Russia. According to White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan, Biden’s speeches at the formal ceremony and the renowned Pointe du Hoc cliffs will focus on the perils of isolationism and the importance of confronting dictators. Biden plans to draw historical parallels from World War II, through the Cold War, and the establishment of NATO, to the current conflict in Europe where NATO defends freedom and sovereignty.
A particularly poignant moment will occur when Biden meets with veterans of the D-Day invasion, acknowledging their heroic contributions. White House national security spokesperson John Kirby mentioned that Biden and Macron would discuss the potential use of $300 billion in frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.
Biden, who is seeking re-election against Trump, has made the preservation and enhancement of U.S. democracy a central theme of his campaign. This stance follows Trump’s tumultuous presidency and his refusal to accept the 2020 election results, leading to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by his supporters. Trump has also vowed to target political opponents, deport immigrants, and punish whistleblowers if re-elected, raising concerns about his commitment to NATO, which he has previously threatened to leave if allies do not increase their defense spending.
Biden’s pro-democracy message might be complicated by his unwavering support for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in the conflict with Hamas in Gaza. This war has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, and Netanyahu faces war crimes charges from the International Criminal Court. Some of Biden’s international allies and progressive U.S. voters are calling for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel, an issue that could impact Biden’s support in key states like Michigan in the upcoming election.
The D-Day commemorations occur amidst the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine, a modern conflict that resonates with the historical struggle for freedom and democracy. At a political fundraiser before his trip, Biden highlighted the significance of the D-Day invasion as a crucial moment in the defense of freedom and democracy. He emphasized that the sacrifices made on the Normandy beaches must not be forgotten, as the future of democracy and freedom remains at stake.
“Democracy is literally on the ballot this year. The future of democracy and freedom is at stake. We have brave soldiers who gave their lives on the beaches of Normandy who did their part,” Biden told donors in Connecticut on Monday. His visit to France aims to honor past sacrifices and reinforce the commitment to defending democratic values in the present day.
