“Deadpool & Wolverine” has made a thrilling return to the big screen, bringing fans an abundance of cameos and Easter eggs that span the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and beyond. This latest installment, which marks Deadpool’s first appearance in six years, is a treasure trove of references, featuring an impressive array of characters from both past Fox franchises and the MCU.
The film not only resurrects Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, whose character met a tragic end in 2017’s “Logan,” but also features an extraordinary collection of cameos that celebrate the extensive superhero legacy. Deadpool, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, breaks the fourth wall with even greater enthusiasm this time, delivering a film packed with nods to various superhero worlds.
The cameo fest kicks off with MCU star Chris Evans appearing as Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch. Despite earlier statements suggesting he wouldn’t return to the MCU, Evans reprises his role from the 2005 “Fantastic Four” and its sequel, finding himself in the Void—a realm where pre-Disney-acquisition characters reside. Alongside him, viewers spot Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Wesley Snipes as Blade, Dafne Keen’s X-23, and Channing Tatum’s Gambit, a character he never officially portrayed but was long rumored to join the X-Men universe.
The film also includes appearances by MCU characters like Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan, the Hulk, and Wunmi Mosaku’s Hunter B-15 from “Loki.” In addition to these, there are several Deadpool and Wolverine variants: Henry Cavill makes an appearance as Cavillrine, Blake Lively voices Ladypool, Matthew McConaughey briefly lends his voice to Cowboy Deadpool, and Nathan Fillion is featured as Headpool, a disembodied head.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is also replete with references to Reynolds’ and Jackman’s past projects, such as “The Proposal” and “Music Man,” and even addresses the off-screen drama between Reynolds and Snipes during the making of “Blade: Trinity.” The film cleverly repurposes footage from old Fox and MCU films, including a humorous scene that reuses a tearful moment from “Thor: The Dark World” between Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Deadpool.
The cameos extend beyond characters to iconic props and locations. Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm is seen with a red and white armband, teasing a return as Captain America before exclaiming, “Flame on!” The film also features references to Tony Stark’s arc reactor and the Fantastic Four’s flying car, as well as a crashed helicarrier and the remnants of the Black Order’s Q-Ship.
Fans will also notice a plethora of Easter eggs, such as a nod to Deadpool’s chimichanga obsession and a store named “Liefeld’s Just Feet,” referencing the Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld’s infamous drawing style.
This vibrant and meta-packed film showcases an array of characters and nods that span across superhero history, blending past and present in a way that will delight fans of all ages. As Deadpool and Wolverine navigate through the multiverse, they encounter both familiar faces and new surprises, making “Deadpool & Wolverine” a must-watch for any superhero aficionado.
