Sachin Sharma, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Delhi, recently addressed the UPSC aspirants who were protesting the tragic deaths of three students caused by water-logging. His heartfelt words resonated deeply with the demonstrators as he shared in their grief and frustration. “I am feeling the same emotions as you because I am a part of you,” he expressed, highlighting his solidarity with the students.
Sharma assured the protesters that the Delhi Police were transparent about the incident and were committed to taking all necessary legal actions. “Three people have died. Why will we hide anything? We assure you that we will do whatever is legally possible. The investigation is on,” he stated, aiming to build trust and demonstrate the seriousness with which the authorities are handling the situation.
The Additional DCP emphasized his connection to the student community, acknowledging his own journey and experiences that paralleled theirs. “I was part of you. I can completely understand what you are going through because I am also going through the same. Don’t think that since I am wearing the uniform I am feeling nothing… I am feeling a lot. But I have some responsibilities as well. I hope that you also get these responsibilities very soon,” he added, encouraging the students to continue striving towards their goals despite the tragedy.
The Delhi Police detained the owner and coordinator of an IAS coaching center in Old Rajender Nagar, following the deaths of the students when the basement of the institute flooded. This incident has led to a case being registered against the coaching institute, the building’s management, and those responsible for maintaining the drainage system. The swift action reflects the authorities’ commitment to accountability and justice.
The victims of this unfortunate event were identified as Shreya Yadav from Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nivin Dalwin from Ernakulam, Kerala. The rescue operations, which were conducted by the Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), underscore the gravity of the situation and the coordinated efforts to address it.
The protesting students demanded accountability from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the management of the IAS coaching institute. Their calls for action were not just about seeking justice for the deceased but also about ensuring that such tragedies do not recur. They urged for systemic changes and improved safety measures to protect the lives of future aspirants.
This tragic incident follows closely on the heels of another unfortunate event where a UPSC aspirant was electrocuted on a waterlogged street in Delhi. These back-to-back tragedies have heightened the urgency for effective solutions to the city’s water-logging issues, which pose serious risks to residents, particularly during the monsoon season.
In light of these events, there is a pressing need for the authorities to not only address the immediate causes but also to implement long-term strategies to prevent such incidents. The commitment of officials like Additional DCP Sachin Sharma and the proactive involvement of the Delhi Police in the investigation are crucial steps towards justice and reform.
The ongoing investigation and the actions taken by the authorities will be closely watched by the public, especially by the student community. The hope is that these measures will lead to meaningful changes that enhance safety and prevent future tragedies, ensuring that the sacrifices of Shreya Yadav, Tanya Soni, and Nivin Dalwin are not in vain.
