Elon Musk has conveyed doubt regarding the success of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI firm that has been causing a stir in the tech industry. As it draws interest for its AI progress, Musk’s remarks on X (previously Twitter) indicate that he is not fully persuaded by its assertions or buzz. He has ridiculed DeepSeek AI in a social media post. DeepSeek’s AI chatbot is praised as a significant innovation, with numerous comparisons being made to prominent American AI models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
What stands out, though, is that DeepSeek is said to have accomplished these outcomes with significantly less investment. This has generated significant enthusiasm within the AI community, as many perceive it to be a formidable rival to the existing leaders. The company’s ascent to fame has prompted a significant change in the market, as Nvidia, a major provider of GPUs for AI, experienced a substantial decline in its market cap following the announcement of DeepSeek’s newest AI product.
In spite of the excitement, Elon Musk remains unimpressed. When CEO Marc Benioff of Salesforce commended DeepSeek’s achievements and stated that data and metadata represent the true worth of AI, Musk retorted with a scornful “Lmao, no.” This brief yet pointed response emphasized Musk’s skepticism regarding the worth of DeepSeek’s AI model.
Musk continued beyond that. He also expressed his opinions on DeepSeek’s hardware features, especially its utilization of GPUs. DeepSeek asserts it utilizes approximately 10,000 A100 Nvidia GPUs, but Musk and Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang suggested that the company could be concealing its actual hardware capabilities because of US export restrictions. Wang indicated that DeepSeek probably possesses approximately 50,000 Nvidia Hopper GPUs, potentially enhancing their AI system’s capabilities well beyond what has been publicly revealed.
Musk replied to Wang’s assertion with a straightforward “Obviously,” reinforcing his view that the firm lacks transparency. Besides his critical remarks about DeepSeek’s AI technology, Musk also seized the moment to jest about the company’s Chinese background. When a user quipped that DeepSeek’s AI, known as R1, was “leaked from a lab in China,” Musk responded with a laughing emoji, alluding to previous debates concerning China’s involvement in worldwide tech advancements. Although DeepSeek is attracting more attention and acclaim, Musk’s replies imply he is skeptical that the company’s AI represents a real threat to the supremacy of American tech giants such as OpenAI. His skepticism also implies that there is an increasing competition between AI firms in the US and China.
