On Saturday, a large crowd of South Koreans assembled in the capital, Seoul, to express their support for or against impeached president Yoon Suk Yeol ahead of a court ruling on whether his brief martial law declaration makes him unfit for office.
The Constitutional Court is anticipated to rule soon on the removal of Yoon in a case that triggered South Korea’s most severe political crisis in years and unsettled financial markets. In central Seoul, a substantial crowd of anti-Yoon protesters gathered in a large square, calling for his swift ousting, alongside opposition politicians.
A short distance away, supporters of conservative Yoon filled an entire street, demanding his return while waving South Korean and American flags.
The primary opposition Democratic Party claimed that a million individuals participated in the anti-Yoon protest, whereas the police estimated the attendance at each demonstration to be 43,000, as reported by the Yonhap news agency.
Yoon is currently facing trial for a criminal charge of insurrection, although he was released from custody last week.
The imposition of martial law and its repercussions have exacerbated significant social divisions between conservatives and liberals, while also creating strain on institutions and the military, which found itself in a dilemma regarding the enforcement of martial law.
Pro- and anti-Yoon protesters have flooded the streets in their hundreds of thousands, week after week, since the crisis began. In a Gallup Korea survey released on Friday, 58% were in favor of Yoon’s impeachment, whereas 37% were against it.
