To limit the spread of non-compliant products via e-commerce platforms, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has conducted search and seizure operations at various warehouses of major e-commerce platforms, such as Amazon and Flipkart, in cities including Lucknow, Gurugram, and Delhi.
During a recent operation carried out on 07 March 2025 at an Amazon warehouse in Lucknow, the BIS confiscated 215 toys and 24 hand blenders, none of which had the required BIS certification. In February 2025, a comparable operation at an Amazon warehouse in Gurugram led to the confiscation of 58 aluminium foils, 34 metallic water bottles, 25 toys, 20 hand blenders, 7 PVC cables, 2 food mixers, and 1 speaker – all identified as non-certified.
In a similar raid on a Flipkart warehouse in Gurugram, managed by Instakart Services Pvt Ltd, BIS confiscated 534 stainless steel (vacuum insulated) bottles, 134 toys, and 41 speakers that lacked certification. BIS’s inquiries into various infractions on Amazon and Flipkart linked non-certified items to Techvision International Pvt Ltd.
Following this lead, BIS executed raids at two separate locations of Techvision International in Delhi, discovering around 7,000 electric water heaters, 4,000 electric food mixers, 95 electric room heaters, and 40 gas stoves, all lacking BIS certification. Seized non-certified products feature brands such as Digismart, Activa, Inalsa, Cello Swift, and Butterfly, among others.
BIS is proactively monitoring the market to guarantee that consumer products, including those on online platforms, meet the relevant safety and quality standards. In the course of monitoring, BIS acquires different consumer goods and conducts thorough tests to ensure they meet the required standards.
Nonetheless, in the course of its monitoring efforts, BIS has discovered that various non-certified items are available for purchase on e-commerce sites like Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, Myntra, and BigBasket, despite the fact that BIS certification is compulsory for these products
These significant seizures emphasize the prevalent problem of unsafe non-certified goods being sold on the internet, stressing the pressing necessity for e-commerce platforms to implement stricter due diligence to ensure that only BIS-certified items are offered for sale when required by the Central Government. In this context, BIS has sent notifications to all these e-commerce platforms, instructing them to ensure that products needing BIS certification are properly certified before being offered to consumers.
