No place for double standards on terrorism: PM Modi’s strong message in Brazil

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India and Brazil firmly reject terrorism and its supporters, emphasizing that double standards regarding terrorism are unacceptable, implicitly referring to Pakistan and its steadfast ally China.

“Our thinking on the fight against terrorism is aligned – zero-tolerance and zero-double standards,” PM Modi said during a joint press statement with Brazilian President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva after their delegation-level talks.

India and Brazil strongly oppose terrorism and those who support it, the prime minister said, without naming any country. In the past, India has described Pakistan as the “global epicentre of terrorism.” “There is no place for double standards on terrorism,” he said, in a veiled reference to China,

PM Modi expressed gratitude to President Lula for his solidarity and assistance following the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April.

In the meeting, the two leaders engaged in comprehensive discussions on various aspects of their relationship, such as trade and investment, defense and security, health and pharmaceuticals, space, renewable energy, food and energy security, infrastructure development, digital public infrastructure, culture, and interpersonal connections, stated Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

They examined paths for partnership in critical minerals, innovative technologies, AI & supercomputing, digital collaboration & mobility, he mentioned, noting that they established a bilateral trade goal of USD 20 billion for the upcoming five years. Following the discussions, both parties signed agreements to enhance cooperation in various sectors.

PM Modi, who reached here for a State Visit following the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, stated that his journey to Brazil will enhance the momentum of bilateral relations.

Earlier, PM Modi was welcomed with a magnificent ceremony that included a distinctive 114-horse parade at the Alvorada Palace in Brasilia. He also observed a performance of an Indian classical bhajan at his reception.
