Once the full-time whistle was blown by referee Darren England at the pre-season game at Deepdale Stadium in Preston—where Liverpool triumphed over Preston North End 3-1—fans in the away section honored Diogo Jota with an emotional tribute. The scenes affected Liverpool commentators and Scottish left-back Andy Robertson emotionally.
The Portuguese striker, who made 182 appearances for the Reds and netted 65 goals, sadly died in a car accident in Spain earlier this month, along with his brother André Silva. The incident occurred just under two weeks after Jota wed his spouse, Rute, leaving her and their three kids behind. Sunday’s game was Liverpool’s initial appearance following the heartbreaking news.
Tributes to Jota were seen all around the pitch. Liverpool fans held up banners and sang the iconic anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Liverpool academy player Conor Bradley chose not to celebrate his goal out of respect for the late forward. Meanwhile, striker Darwin Núñez paid homage by mimicking two of Jota’s signature goal celebrations—the famous ‘Shark’ and the ‘Gaming’ gestures. Left-winger Cody Gakpo joined in as well, performing the Shark celebration after scoring Liverpool’s third goal.
A particularly emotional moment occurred after the final whistle, as players and coaching staff—regardless of their participation in the match—gathered together and clapped for five minutes while Jota’s tribute song resonated throughout the stadium.
Liverpool FC commentators Gary Gillespie and John Bradley on LFC TV found it overwhelming, as they were clearly touched while recounting the poignant moments. Andy Robertson, one of Jota’s best friends at the club, posted on social media that he needed to take a step back during the tribute, confessing it was difficult for him to be with his friends and he required some time alone.
