A deadly shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office tower left four people dead and one critically injured before the gunman took his own life. The attacker, identified by authorities as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, entered 345 Park Avenue on Monday evening armed with an M4-style rifle and opened fire in a targeted assault.
Tamura arrived at the building around 6:30 p.m. and first shot off-duty NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who was working a private security assignment. Two more victims — a female civilian and a building security guard — were fatally shot in the lobby. Tamura then proceeded to the 33rd floor where he opened fire inside an office suite and killed another individual before turning the weapon on himself.
Authorities confirmed that Tamura had no prior criminal record but did have a documented history of mental health challenges. He had driven across the country over several days, passing through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey before arriving in New York. A search of his vehicle revealed ammunition, a second firearm, a backpack, and prescription medications.
Police say no explosives were found, and Tamura acted alone. Investigators are probing a possible motive, including whether any of the office tenants — such as the NFL or investment firms — were deliberate targets. Tamura reportedly had grievances tied to brain injury issues related to sports, raising speculation about his intent.
Officer Didarul Islam, a father of two with a third child on the way, was hailed as a hero. New York Mayor Eric Adams praised his service, calling his actions brave and selfless.
The incident has reignited concerns about mass shootings and workplace security, as 345 Park Avenue houses several major corporations. This marks one of the deadliest shootings in New York this year.
