According to authorities on Saturday, an elderly woman in Mumbai lost Rs 18.5 lakh, her life savings, after she clicked on a fake link while attempting to get a litre of milk via an online delivery app.

On August 4, the 71-year-old woman, who resides in the Wadala neighborhood of the city, was the victim of a phone call from a man posing as “Deepak,” a milk company official. According to an officer who spoke to news agency PTI, the caller sent her a link and told her to enter personal information in order to place her order.

According to the police, the woman stayed on the call for about an hour and did as instructed. The scammer contacted again the next day and got more details. A few days later, the woman found out that money had been embezzled during a normal visit to the bank. Her three bank accounts had a total of Rs 18.5 lakh taken out.

After clicking on the link, the accused allegedly obtained access to her phone, according to the police. The inquiry is underway, and a case has been filed. The event occurs at a time when cybercrimes are on the rise in India, where scammers are increasingly using strategies like impersonating regular transactions to trick victims.
