A’red alert’ was issued by the IMD for the city and surrounding regions on Monday after Mumbai saw heavy rainfall for the third day in a row. Drivers reported sluggish traffic and decreased visibility in several areas due to the intense downpours. On Monday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation announced a holiday for all Mumbai schools and institutions that start sessions after 12 p.m.
According to Monday’s IMD forecast, Mumbai will see moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the city and its suburbs, with the chance of extremely heavy rain and strong winds at night. The predicted temperature range is 27°C to 24°C.
After the heavy rain, some roads were left flooded. Water accumulated in several places along low-lying areas like the Lokhandwala Complex and the Andheri Subway, interfering with traffic flow.
According to officials and passengers, suburban trains—which are considered the city’s lifeline—were delayed by 15 to 20 minutes. The bus services operated by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) company, however, did not experience any disruptions. The rain caused some sections of the road to become inundated. Water buildup disrupted traffic flow in areas like the Lokhandwala Complex and the Andheri Subway.
Officials and commuters said that Mumbai’s subway trains, which are considered to be its lifeline, were 15 to 20 minutes behind schedule. According to officials, the island city received an average of 54.58 mm of rainfall over the 24-hour period that ended at 8 am on Monday. The eastern suburbs received 72.61 mm, while the western suburbs received 65.86 mm.
After intense rain, a school bus carrying six students and two staff members got stuck on a flooded road in Mumbai on Monday, according to officials. All those on board were saved when police quickly raced to the site. Schools with morning shifts announced a half-day due to the ongoing rain, allowing pupils to go early.
Prior to Matunga police arriving and ensuring everyone’s safe escape, the private school bus had been stranded in an inundated area in Matunga, central Mumbai, for more than 30 minutes, an official told.
