Officials say that at least two people have been killed and five others, including a two-year-old boy, have been injured in massive Russian attacks on Ukraine’s capital overnight.

Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, claimed Wednesday that Russia had attacked the capital with a series of missile and drone strikes. Drone debris struck one of the floors of a residential tower in the Dniprovskiy region, killing one person and saving ten others. According to Klitschko, a structure caught fire in the Dnipro district, resulting in the second casualty. Ten people were evacuated.

A missile fragment that fell in the Pechersky district started a fire. Another fire broke out in a building, a hangar, and a residential tower in Darnytsky due to drone debris.

According to Klitschko, there were reports of explosions in at least four districts early on Wednesday, breaking glass in homes and starting multiple fires. Overnight, strikes also occurred in other parts of Ukraine.

According to Oleh Syniehubov, the governor of the northeastern Kharkiv region of Ukraine, a drone attack destroyed cars and railway infrastructure. In the Zaporizhia region, Ukrainian officials issued an airborne alert. Drone assaults, according to Oleh Kiper, the head of the southern Odesa region, damaged Izmail city’s port and energy facilities.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, has been attempting to persuade Donald Trump, his American counterpart, to give Ukraine long-range Tomahawk missiles so that it might launch strikes farther into Russian territory and have leverage in peace negotiations. In a meeting with Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday, Trump retracted his earlier statements that he was somewhat amenable to the concept.

The shift occurred one day after Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin made an unexpected phone contact. The two leaders had decided to meet for negotiations during their phone conversation, but those hopes were shattered on Tuesday when representatives from both sides stated that the meeting would not happen anytime soon.

“I don’t want to have a wasted meeting … I’ll see what happens,” said Trump.
