Philippines Says Fishermen Injured as Chinese Vessels Damage Boats in South China Sea Encounter

News Mania Desk /Piyal Chatterjee/15th December 2025

The Philippines has reported that several of its fishermen were injured and fishing boats damaged following a confrontation with Chinese maritime forces in the South China Sea, deepening tensions between the two countries over disputed waters. The incident occurred near Sabina Shoal, an area claimed by both nations and located within what Manila says is its exclusive economic zone.

According to Philippine authorities, a group of local fishing boats was operating in the area when Chinese coast guard vessels approached and began aggressive manoeuvres. Officials said the Chinese ships used high-pressure water cannons and blocking tactics against the smaller fishing vessels, causing injuries to crew members and significant damage to at least two boats.

The Philippine Coast Guard said the encounter placed the fishermen in serious danger, particularly as strong waves and currents were reported at the time. Authorities also alleged that smaller Chinese boats cut the anchor lines of some fishing vessels, further increasing the risk to those on board. The injured fishermen were later treated after Philippine coast guard ships managed to reach the area and provide assistance.

Manila strongly criticised the actions of the Chinese vessels, describing them as unsafe and contrary to internationally accepted maritime practices. Coast guard officials said the use of force against civilian fishing boats was irresponsible and called for restraint to prevent escalation in the already tense waters of the South China Sea.

China, however, has maintained that its coast guard acted to enforce maritime regulations in what it considers disputed territory. Beijing claims extensive areas of the South China Sea, a position that overlaps with the maritime claims of several Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines.

Sabina Shoal has been the site of multiple standoffs in recent months, reflecting the broader strategic rivalry in the region. The Philippines has repeatedly accused China of aggressive behaviour toward its fishermen and coast guard vessels, while China has rejected these claims and defended its actions as lawful.

The latest confrontation adds to growing concerns about the safety of civilian mariners operating in contested waters. Philippine officials said they would continue to document such incidents and raise them through diplomatic channels, stressing the need to uphold international law and protect the rights of fishermen.
