Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi strongly criticised the United States during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, describing Washington as “an empire in decline” and accusing it of pursuing policies that contribute to global instability and conflict.

Speaking at the high-level gathering hosted by India, Araghchi said many countries were beginning to realise that regional conflicts and coercive policies ultimately harm all nations, including those initiating them. He argued that the United States has increasingly relied on sanctions, military pressure, and geopolitical influence to maintain its dominance, but claimed that such strategies were weakening international stability rather than strengthening it.

The remarks came during an important BRICS meeting attended by foreign ministers from member nations, including India, China, Russia, Brazil, South Africa, and newly inducted countries. Discussions at the summit focused on global security, economic cooperation, energy concerns, and ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the crisis in West Asia.

Araghchi called on BRICS nations to support a more balanced and multipolar world order. He urged member countries to oppose unilateral sanctions and coercive economic measures, which he said disproportionately affect developing nations and violate principles of international cooperation. Without directly naming specific recent actions, the Iranian minister suggested that aggressive foreign policies by powerful countries were fuelling instability across regions. He warned that continued political and military pressure could deepen mistrust between nations and create long-term global insecurity.

The Iranian leader’s comments come at a time of heightened tensions involving Tehran and Western nations. Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and rising uncertainty over regional security have dominated international diplomatic discussions in recent weeks. The issue has also created divisions within the expanded BRICS grouping, especially as some member nations hold differing positions on the regional crisis.

The BRICS meeting in New Delhi has been viewed as a significant diplomatic platform for emerging economies seeking greater influence in global affairs. India, which is chairing the summit, has focused on themes such as economic resilience, supply chain stability, energy security, and reform of international institutions.

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also highlighted concerns over unilateral sanctions and coercive actions during the discussions. He stressed the importance of dialogue, multilateral cooperation, and respecting the interests of developing countries in addressing global challenges.

Araghchi’s arrival in New Delhi also drew attention after reports noted symbolic messaging associated with his official aircraft, reflecting Iran’s attempt to highlight the humanitarian and political dimensions of the ongoing regional tensions. Although no formal resolution targeting the United States emerged from the meeting, the sharp criticism directed at Washington highlighted the changing geopolitical dynamics shaping discussions within BRICS and the broader international order.
