India on Thursday extended condolences to Iran following the death of its Supreme Leader, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visiting the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi to sign a condolence book opened in memory of Ali Khamenei. The move marks India’s first formal diplomatic gesture after the Iranian leader’s killing, which has sent shockwaves across the Middle East. During his visit to the Embassy of Iran in New Delhi, Misri conveyed India’s sympathies to the Iranian government and its people. Signing the condolence register on behalf of the Government of India, he expressed solidarity with the country during what officials described as a moment of deep national grief.

Khamenei, who had been Iran’s Supreme Leader for decades, played a central role in shaping the country’s political and strategic direction. His death has triggered widespread reactions globally and raised concerns about stability in the region, with governments and leaders around the world offering condolences and closely monitoring the developments.

The Indian government’s gesture reflects the longstanding diplomatic relationship between New Delhi and Tehran. India and Iran share deep historical, cultural and economic ties, and the two countries have cooperated on several strategic projects over the years. India’s outreach at this sensitive time is being seen as a reaffirmation of that relationship.

Officials said that apart from signing the condolence book, the foreign secretary also interacted with Iranian diplomats at the embassy. The meeting served as an opportunity for India to convey its support and condolences directly to representatives of the Iranian government.

India has so far maintained a cautious stance regarding the circumstances surrounding Khamenei’s death, focusing instead on expressing sympathy and emphasising the importance of peace and stability in the region. Analysts say New Delhi is carefully balancing its diplomatic relationships in the Middle East while monitoring the potential geopolitical implications of the incident.

The development has heightened tensions across the region, with concerns that the situation could escalate further. Many countries have urged restraint and called for efforts to prevent the crisis from widening. For India, maintaining stability in the Middle East remains a key priority given the region’s strategic importance for energy supplies, trade and the large Indian diaspora living and working there. India’s diplomatic engagement following Khamenei’s death reflects its broader approach of maintaining dialogue and cooperation with all key regional partners during times of uncertainty.
