Wikipedia restricts AI-generated content, reinforces editorial standards

Wikipedia has introduced stricter guidelines limiting the use of artificial intelligence in content creation, aiming to safeguard the accuracy and credibility of its platform. The updated rules prohibit contributors from using AI tools, including large language models, to generate or substantially rewrite articles.
The move follows growing concerns among editors about the reliability of AI-generated text, which has often been found to include factual errors, fabricated references and misleading interpretations. Wikipedia, which relies on verifiable sources and neutral writing, considers such risks incompatible with its editorial standards.
While the platform has imposed a ban on AI-written content, it has allowed limited use of such tools for minor tasks like copy editing or translation. However, these uses must be closely supervised by human editors to ensure accuracy and adherence to guidelines.
The decision comes after extensive discussions within Wikipedia’s global editing community, many of whom supported tighter restrictions to maintain quality. Additional measures have also been introduced to quickly remove suspected AI-generated entries that lack proper sourcing.
Experts say the policy reflects wider concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on information integrity. By reinforcing human oversight, Wikipedia aims to preserve its reputation as a trusted and reliable source of knowledge in the digital age.
