Search for Pawan Khera Enters Day 2 as Political Tensions Rise
News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/8th April 2026

The search for senior Congress leader Pawan Khera continued for a second consecutive day, with Assam Police stepping up efforts to trace him amid an intensifying political controversy. Police teams have been unable to locate Khera, who is believed to be in Hyderabad, although his exact whereabouts remain unknown. Security has been heightened around his reported residence in the city’s Banjara Hills area, while officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
The action follows a case registered on a complaint filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Himanta Biswa Sarma. Earlier this week, Assam Police conducted a search at Khera’s residence in Delhi, where electronic devices and certain documents were seized. Authorities have not disclosed details of the materials but described them as relevant to the investigation.
The controversy stems from allegations made by Khera during a media interaction, where he claimed that the Chief Minister’s wife possessed multiple passports and held undisclosed foreign assets. These claims have been strongly denied by the Chief Minister and his family, who have termed them baseless and politically motivated. The issue has quickly escalated into a major political flashpoint, especially in the run-up to elections. Himanta Biswa Sarma has asserted that strict legal action will be taken, emphasizing that law enforcement agencies are capable of tracking down individuals regardless of location.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress has criticised the police action, alleging that it is aimed at intimidating opposition leaders ahead of the polls. Party members have accused the ruling establishment of misusing state machinery for political purposes. Authorities in Hyderabad have indicated that they will cooperate with Assam Police if formally approached. As the search continues, the case has further heightened political tensions, adding to the charged atmosphere ahead of the upcoming elections.
