Section 144 Imposed Near Kolkata Counting Centres After Late-Night Tension

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee/ 1st May 2026

Authorities in Kolkata have imposed restrictions on large gatherings near several vote counting centres following high drama and tension on the eve of counting. The move, enforced by Kolkata Police, aims to maintain law and order and ensure a smooth counting process amid a politically charged atmosphere.

The restrictions, effectively prohibiting large assemblies under Section 144, have been implemented in multiple areas where counting of votes is scheduled. Officials said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure after protests broke out late at night over allegations of irregularities at certain counting centres.

The controversy began when leaders and workers of the Trinamool Congress raised concerns about what they described as “suspicious activities” inside strong rooms where ballot materials and electronic voting machines were stored. The claims triggered protests outside the centres, with party representatives demanding clarification and tighter monitoring.

However, election authorities moved swiftly to address the situation. Manoj Kumar Agarwal, who is overseeing the process, dismissed the allegations and clarified that all procedures were being carried out in accordance with established rules. He explained that the activity in question involved the sorting of postal ballots, a routine part of the counting process conducted under strict supervision.

Agarwal further noted that the use of torchlight inside strong rooms—cited by some as suspicious—was due to electricity arrangements and should not be misconstrued as wrongdoing. Following these clarifications, the protesting leaders eventually withdrew from the sites, easing immediate tensions.

Despite the de-escalation, authorities have tightened security across all counting centres. Strong rooms have been sealed, and additional police personnel have been deployed to prevent any untoward incidents. Officials emphasized that maintaining transparency and public confidence in the electoral process remains a top priority.

The developments come against the backdrop of heightened political rivalry in the state, with accusations and counter-accusations intensifying ahead of the counting of votes. Leaders including Mamata Banerjee have earlier voiced concerns over possible irregularities, adding to the charged environment.
