Google Launches Fitbit Air, Rebrands Fitbit App as Google Health

Google has introduced a new wearable fitness tracker called Fitbit Air and announced the transformation of the Fitbit app into a new platform named Google Health, marking a major expansion of the company’s health and wellness ecosystem. The launch reflects Google’s increasing focus on artificial intelligence-driven healthcare technology and connected fitness services.

The Fitbit Air is designed as a lightweight, screenless fitness tracker aimed at users who prefer continuous health monitoring without the distractions of a traditional smartwatch. Unlike devices that focus on notifications and apps, the Fitbit Air concentrates entirely on tracking wellness-related data through passive monitoring.

According to Google, the device records metrics including heart rate, sleep patterns, blood oxygen levels, heart rate variability and physical activity. The tracker syncs with smartphones through the newly launched Google Health app, where users can access detailed analytics and personalised insights related to fitness and recovery.

Google said the Fitbit Air is its most compact and affordable wearable so far, with a starting price of $99.99. The device supports both Android and iOS systems and offers battery life of up to seven days on a single charge. Company officials stated that the screenless design is intended to encourage healthier digital habits by reducing constant screen interaction while still providing important health data.

Alongside the device launch, Google officially rebranded the Fitbit app as Google Health. The updated platform is designed to act as a central hub for wellness and medical information, integrating data from Fitbit devices, Health Connect and other health-related services into a single interface. Existing Fitbit users are expected to receive the update automatically.

One of the most significant additions to the platform is Google Health Coach, an artificial intelligence-powered wellness assistant built using the company’s Gemini AI technology. The feature provides personalised recommendations related to exercise, sleep, nutrition and recovery based on individual health data collected through the wearable device.

The announcement generated mixed reactions among users and technology analysts. Supporters praised the minimalist design and lower pricing of the Fitbit Air compared to several competing fitness trackers. However, some long-time Fitbit users expressed concerns about changes to familiar Fitbit features following deeper integration into Google’s ecosystem.

Industry experts said the launch highlights Google’s broader strategy of combining wearable technology, artificial intelligence and personalised healthcare services into a unified digital health platform.
