BJP Secures Record Victory in Falta Repoll, TMC Slips to Fourth Position

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 25th May 2026

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a landslide win in the Falta Assembly repoll in West Bengal, securing the seat with a historic margin of more than one lakh votes. BJP candidate Debangshu Panda defeated his nearest rival by over 1,09,000 votes, marking one of the largest victory margins witnessed in the state in recent years.

The repoll was conducted following allegations of irregularities and disturbances during the earlier phase of voting, prompting the Election Commission to order fresh polling in the constituency. The election saw tight security arrangements and a high voter turnout, reflecting strong public interest in the politically significant contest.

The result delivered a major setback to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), whose candidate Jahangir Khan finished in fourth place with fewer than 8,000 votes. The party not only suffered a humiliating defeat but also failed to retain its voter base in the constituency. Political observers noted that it was the first time since the party’s formation in 1998 that a TMC candidate had fallen to fourth position in an election in West Bengal.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), emerged as the second-largest party in the repoll, while Congress secured the third position. The outcome highlighted changing political equations in the state, where both the BJP and the Left appear to be making gains at the expense of the ruling party.

Following the results, BJP leaders celebrated the victory as a reflection of growing support for the party in West Bengal. Senior BJP leaders described the mandate as a strong message from voters against the state government and claimed that the result demonstrated public demand for political change.

The massive margin of victory also carried symbolic importance, as BJP leaders had earlier appealed to voters to ensure a win by more than one lakh votes. The party’s success in achieving that target has further strengthened its position ahead of future political battles in the state. The Falta repoll result has now triggered intense political discussion across West Bengal, with analysts viewing it as a significant indicator of shifting voter sentiment and emerging electoral trends in the region.
