Supreme Court Orders CBI Probe in Twisha Sharma Death Case, Urges Media Restraint

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 25th May 2026

The Supreme Court has directed that the investigation into the death of former model and actor Twisha Sharma be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), while also urging the media to exercise restraint in reporting on the sensitive case.

During the hearing, the apex court observed that the matter had generated widespread public attention and required an impartial investigation to ensure transparency and fairness. The bench noted concerns surrounding the handling of the case and said a central agency probe would help maintain public confidence in the investigation process. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the Madhya Pradesh government had agreed to transfer the case to the CBI. He stated that all necessary formalities for the transfer would be completed promptly so that the agency could begin its inquiry without delay.

The court also expressed concern over extensive media coverage and public discussions surrounding the case. Judges requested news organisations to avoid publishing statements made by family members, witnesses, or the accused while the investigation is underway. According to the bench, speculative reporting and public commentary could affect the fairness of the probe and influence public perception before the facts are fully established.

The Supreme Court further advised both the victim’s family and the accused persons to refrain from making public statements and instead cooperate with investigators through proper legal channels. The judges emphasised the importance of allowing the investigating agency to carry out its work without external pressure or interference.

Twisha Sharma was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal earlier this month. Her family has alleged that she faced dowry harassment, domestic abuse, and mental torture from her husband and in-laws. The allegations sparked widespread outrage and triggered demands for an independent investigation.

The case attracted national attention after questions were raised regarding the initial police investigation and the circumstances surrounding her death. A second post-mortem examination was later conducted by a medical team from AIIMS following court directions. At present, Sharma’s husband remains in police custody, while legal proceedings involving other family members connected to the case are continuing before the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
