Rare Blue Micromoon to Light Up Skies as Smallest Full Moon of 2026

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 30th May 2026

Skywatchers across the world are set to witness a rare celestial event this weekend as the yearโ€™s smallest full moon, known as a Blue Micromoon, appears in the night sky. The phenomenon combines two uncommon lunar events, making it one of the most notable astronomical spectacles of 2026.

The full moon, expected to reach peak illumination on May 31, is classified as a Blue Moon because it is the second full moon to occur within the same calendar month. The first full moon of May appeared on May 1, and the lunar cycle of approximately 29.5 days has resulted in a second full moon before the month ends. Despite its name, the moon will not appear blue in colour.

What makes the event particularly unusual is that it will also be a Micromoon. This occurs when a full moon coincides with the Moonโ€™s apogeeโ€”the point in its orbit where it is farthest from Earth. As a result, the moon will appear slightly smaller and less bright than a typical full moon. Astronomers estimate that it will be more than 400,000 kilometres away from Earth, making it the most distant full moon of the year.

Adding to the visual appeal, the bright red star Antares, one of the most prominent stars in the constellation Scorpius, will appear near the moon. The contrast between the starโ€™s reddish glow and the moonโ€™s silvery light is expected to create an impressive sight for observers.

Astronomy experts note that while the difference in the moonโ€™s apparent size may be difficult to detect without comparison, the event remains significant because of the rare combination of a Blue Moon and a Micromoon. The occurrence offers astronomy enthusiasts a unique opportunity to observe an unusual lunar display and appreciate the dynamics of the Earth-Moon system.
