Karnataka Minister Ramalinga Reddy Quits Cabinet Over Portfolio Allocation

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 5th June 2026

A political storm erupted in Karnataka after senior Congress leader Ramalinga Reddy resigned from the state Cabinet, expressing dissatisfaction with the portfolio assigned to him in the newly constituted government. The resignation came shortly after the allocation of ministerial responsibilities, highlighting growing tensions within the ruling Congress.
Reddy, a veteran legislator and influential leader from Bengaluru, submitted his resignation after being allotted the Water Resources portfolio instead of the Bengaluru Development department, which he had reportedly sought. Sources indicated that the minister was unhappy with the decision and felt that his long experience in city administration and governance had not been adequately considered during the portfolio distribution process.
Speaking to reporters, Reddy said his decision was driven by disappointment over the allocation of responsibilities. However, he clarified that his resignation was limited to the ministerial post and did not signal any break with the Congress party. Reaffirming his loyalty to the organisation, he stated that he would continue to serve as a legislator and work for the party’s interests.
The development has drawn significant political attention as it comes at a time when the newly formed government is attempting to establish stability and set its administrative agenda. Reddy’s exit has exposed underlying dissatisfaction among some party leaders over the distribution of key portfolios.
Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar sought to contain the fallout, expressing confidence that the issue could be resolved through discussions. Party leaders also indicated that efforts were underway to persuade Reddy to reconsider his decision and remain in the Cabinet.
