K. Annamalai Quits BJP, Cites Differences Over Tamil Nadu Politics
News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 5th June 2026

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party, stating that his views on the political future of Tamil Nadu no longer align with those of the party leadership. In a letter addressed to BJP president Nitin Nabin, Annamalai said the decision followed extensive discussions with senior leaders and careful consideration of the state’s political direction.
Annamalai, who joined the BJP six years ago after leaving the Indian Police Service, said he had entered politics with the goal of bringing meaningful change to Tamil Nadu. While expressing gratitude to the party leadership for supporting his initiatives and campaigns over the years, he noted that differences had emerged regarding the approach needed to achieve that vision.
The former state chief emphasized that his resignation was not a sudden move. According to him, he had informed senior BJP leaders months ago about his concerns and future plans. He said he now intends to pursue an independent political path that he believes is better suited to addressing the aspirations of the people of Tamil Nadu.
Shortly after announcing his departure, Annamalai revealed plans to launch a new political movement and indicated that it would participate in upcoming electoral contests in the state. The announcement has sparked fresh discussions about the potential impact of a new political force in Tamil Nadu, where regional parties have traditionally dominated the political landscape.
His exit comes after months of speculation about his future within the BJP. Political observers had pointed to tensions over the party’s electoral strategy and alliance decisions in Tamil Nadu, particularly its relationship with the AIADMK. Annamalai was also replaced as the state BJP president earlier this year and did not contest the recent Assembly elections. The BJP has accepted his resignation, marking the end of a significant chapter in the party’s Tamil Nadu unit and opening a new phase in Annamalai’s political journey.
