Telegram Access Curbed in India as Authorities Probe NEET-UG Re-Exam Leak Allegations

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 17th June 2026

The Indian government has imposed restrictions on access to the messaging platform Telegram following a request from the National Testing Agency (NTA), amid an ongoing investigation into the alleged leak of the NEET-UG re-examination question paper. The move comes as authorities seek to prevent the further spread of sensitive examination-related content and ensure the integrity of one of the country’s most important entrance tests.
According to officials, concerns arose after intelligence inputs suggested that several Telegram channels and groups were being used to circulate purported question papers, answer keys, and other confidential material linked to the medical entrance examination. The NTA subsequently approached the government, urging immediate intervention to curb the dissemination of such content while investigations were underway.
In response, access to Telegram was restricted in India as part of efforts to contain the spread of potentially leaked examination material. Authorities believe that encrypted messaging platforms can be used to rapidly distribute confidential documents, making it challenging to track those responsible for such activities.
Investigating agencies, including cybercrime units and law-enforcement officials, have launched a detailed probe into the matter. They are examining digital records, online communication channels, and financial transactions that may reveal how the alleged leak network operated. Officials are also working to identify individuals involved in acquiring, sharing, or selling examination-related content through online platforms.
The controversy has once again brought attention to concerns surrounding the security of competitive examinations in India. NEET-UG, the gateway for admission to undergraduate medical programmes across the country, has faced scrutiny in recent years over allegations of irregularities and paper leaks. The latest development has intensified demands for stronger safeguards and improved monitoring mechanisms to protect examination processes.
Government officials have clarified that the restriction on Telegram is linked specifically to the ongoing investigation and is intended as a preventive measure. They stressed that maintaining fairness and transparency in the examination system remains a top priority. Authorities have indicated that further action will depend on the findings of the investigation, with legal proceedings likely against those found responsible for any wrongdoing.
