Kolkata: Union Minister of State for Education Dr. Sukanta Majumdar on Monday alleged that the recent Kolkata protest was hijacked by Left and ultra-Left groups, claiming that anti-social elements turned the demonstration violent under the guise of the “cockroach agitation.”
Addressing the media, Majumdar said the protest was no longer a genuine student movement and had been taken over by disruptive elements. He alleged that reporters covering the demonstration were attacked and molested, while ordinary citizens were also targeted during the unrest.
“Under the guise of a cockroach agitation, the Left and ultra-Left took to the streets of Kolkata. Anti-social elements and goons hijacked the protest. They attacked and molested reporters. Police are now taking action,” he said.
The Union Minister asserted that the BJP government would adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards violence and lawlessness.
“Under the BJP, there will be no appeasement. Those who committed this atrocity against reporters and common citizens will have to face consequences,” Majumdar added.
His remarks come amid heightened political tensions following the protest, with investigations underway into allegations of violence against journalists and public disorder. Authorities have stated that legal action is being initiated against those found responsible for the attacks.
